This book is an essential read for anyone looking to own, raise, and/or breed bearded dragons. Terri does an excellent job of explaining every facet of bearded dragon care and husbandry, from the moment an egg is laid to the end of the lizard's life. Not only is it exhaustive and informative, it is easy to read and filled with helpful and sometimes even comedic anecdotes from a long-time bearded dragon breeder of high reputation (Terri Sommella). The notes on geriatric care and husbandry practices for aging lizards were touching and heartfelt. I found the sections on enclosures, illnesses, and Q&A to be particularly useful. All the information given is backed up by science and/or experience; no instruction is given without justification and possible ramifications of going with alternatives. Options are given for all facets of bearded dragon husbandry, with a "best option" from experience and the backing of the field usually highlighted. I would urge anybody looking to own a bearded dragon, and even experienced owners, to purchase this book to learn or improve upon proper husbandry for this unique and endearing lizard. I've got both the first and second editions of this manual, and can say that hands-down, for reading pleasure, I prefer the second. It's got a far more conversational tone to it, more anecdotes that pet owners would find appealing, and more photos. I did deduct a point because I feel that the section on feeding could be a bit more comprehensive and expanded - there's a magnificent website that I use as my go-to for dragon feeding instead - but on the whole, this is a great starting point for a new beardie owner. My dragon, Figment, has been raised largely on the advice from this text and from the excellent forum BeardedDragon.org and I haven't had a moment's concern about him since I brought him home.
