The writing is good. The mystery is a cozy fun read mostly because it's in Italy and I love Italy. The depth of the story would be a two-star for me; however the recipes pushed it up to a three-star.From reading other reviews, I see that the couple in this book is a part of a series and has other novels with them as the leading characters. This is fine; but even though this book can stand alone, there must be things about these characters I do not know from reading only this book because their behaviors leads me to believe I'm not familiar enough with them to understand why they are the way they are.For example: The husband, Mike, acts like he has to work on the murder case and is missing all the fun, specifically the Florence field trip. Originally, it was mentioned he could help the chief of police because he's staying at the cooking school/hotel, and is a sheriff back home, and he could be the chief's eyes and ears, but he's never at the hotel to investigate anything. What's the point of him being a part of the investigation at all? Maybe if it was mentioned he's an obsessive cop and he can't help himself, I'd understand it better. Also, in another scene, Signor Berto Moretta's son (Signor Moretta is the owner of the other cooking school in town) works in the Cucina (kitchen store) they own, and he is quite talkative to Kelly who is a complete stranger to him. He tells her everything about everyone in town willingly without any prompting or prodding by her. Why would he do this? He has no reason to specifically tell her anything. He doesn't know who she is. Maybe if she tricked him into talking to her somehow, I could see it. Also, I'm stumped as to why she is so pushy and insistent on being a detective against her husband's wishes and to the endangerment of her. She's there for the cooking school and her honeymoon, but she spends more time snooping around. A reason why she is this way? Maybe from another story? Don't know. It's examples like this that left me feeling flat about the story. If there were a bit more detail about Kelly and Mike, maybe some of their behaviors would've made more sense to me. Again, this could be knowledge provided in other books with them as the leads. Then, I'd have to say that doesn't make this a stand-alone book as much as it's supposed to be. This was my favorite book by this author so far. I loved the setting. The characters were all so interesting. From the start, I thought I knew who the killer was just from how it was all set up. I thought maybe it was like a Colombo episode where we know the killer but find out how and why they did it. No, it wasn’t who I thought. I would go back and forth as to who it was but my ultimate guess was wrong. If you like audiobooks, this one is great. The narrator does a great job. I think she gets better with each one. The only thing was the male voices seemed a little hard to do. Especially Mike’s, but it was still fabulous.
